As they sing in the song, “I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it”.
27th September 2021 is the official launch date of All Oldies Radio on DAB for Herts, Beds, Bucks & North London.
Hertfordshire has always been a special place for me as I’m a Welwyn Garden City boy, born and bred.
It is hard to believe at times that I have been in commercial radio, one way or another, for over 30 years, and wow, I have certainly been through some of the most exciting times in the radio industry.
I’m blessed to have worked with some of biggest radio legends like Alan Freeman through to talented overseas radio icons such as the late Kevin Coan.
I never claim to know everything in Radio and always picking up new skills plus learning from up-and-coming talent in the industry.
Mix all the before mentioned together and you get what is known as All Oldies Radio, a radio station born from me not wanting to let an illness get the better of me.
Everything in my world came to a grinding halt in 2004 when I was rushed to hospital with meningococcal meningitis septicaemia. Without the brilliant NHS based at the original QEII hospital in Welwyn Garden City, I would not be here now. The doctor in charge had just finished working for nearly 24 hours straight and was just about to leave to go home when the ambulance brought me in.
He continued to work his magic on me for just over 6 hours. He brought me back to life, twice, got my stats settled and with the assistance of his dedicated team, saved my life. Something I will forever be so grateful for.
After a month in hospital, I was released to continue recovery at home.
I found I could not watch TV as the bright moving images caused me issues, so, I went back to one of my real true loves…. music.
Being unable to walk, I was not prepared to do nothing, so I started to enhance my radio skills and learn more about internet radio. Slowly, bit by bit, a private stream was operating playing back-to-back hits of the 50s and 60s. The radio geek in me had to eventually add station IDs and Jingles. This was the start of what is now called All Oldies Radio.
In 2019, I teamed up with a group of very talented radio folk and over the following months the company All Oldies Radio Limited was formed.
I have the most wonderful, talented board of directors to work with. Phil Fothergill, Tony Lloyd, Lynsey Dolan, Paul Gray & Emma Lloyd. The amount of love and admiration I have for these guys and girls is off the scale.
Our vision is to bring back local radio, the radio our “Generation X” target demographic grew up with and love. We have been running a national version online but we are going to take it one step further and make it local. Local to an area that myself and our board of Directors know so well – Herts, Beds & Bucks.
Let me briefly take you back to the mid-80s.
Along with a few other radio friends, we campaigned for an FM radio license to be awarded for Hertfordshire. We were just teenagers, with no real funds at the time, and lacking so many skills needed to operate a healthy business module.
Today, for me, it is a totally different ball game. To be able to work alongside such a brilliant board of directors and outstanding broadcasters within our schedule – All Oldies Radio is ready, experienced and qualified to join the Herts, Beds & Bucks DAB multiplex.
Naturally, things will have a slight makeover on air. Some additional shows to add extra variety during weekdays, some new presenters at the weekend, new sung jingles are being created by the amazing team at TM Century thanks to Chris Stevens and then the music.
Our core music is aimed 100% at the generation X demographic, surrounded by the biggest selection of classic hits and tracks that will make you go “Ooooo”. The surprise element tracks, plus, some outstanding specialist music shows and features.
The key difference to our programmes will be the local content. We’ll still have the same presentation style to what you can hear now, except the presenters will be mentioning things that relate to Herts, Beds & Bucks. Finally, local news is coming back to commercial radio within the three counties.
Of course, none of this would be possible without our clients advertising with us. We are a commercial radio station after all.
I have always been keen on supporting local businesses. They have had a rough time since covid landed. They need to get messages across to customers but can not afford traditional radio methods. It was essential for us to work around local clients’ budgets for them, and us, to survive.
Wow, what a response so far. Thank you to those that we have worked with already to on air with us from the 27th September.
All Oldies Radio is more than willing to look at working closely with businesses, charities and organisations. Contact can be made through our website alloldiesradio.com
I hope this gives you an insight into our next adventure and feel free to ask any questions, but, before I sign off, there is one person that has stood by me and believed in me and All Oldies Radio. Big love and respect to my wife. As they saying goes “Behind every man is a great woman”.
Until next time, take care and thanks for all the support.
