Ahhhh. The Memories

A week or two back, I played the Spice Girls on AOR and ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’

It was then that a thousand memories came flooding back, not because I’m a particularly big fan of the girls, but because it held a happy, if not terrifying memory for me.

And the question in my mind was simply, “is there anything better in this world than music to bring back a time, a place, a moment, in all our lives?”. I suspect the answer is no.

Because that Spice Girls song brought back a happy period in my life, but one where I took part (with my fellow disc jockeys at a radio station I was working at), in a Spice Girls tribute act, at a live variety night. Yes. Five disc jockeys dressed up as the Spice Girls. It wasn’t a pretty sight.

I’m not sure what was more terrifying, the stress of trying to remember the dance moves (yes, I have two left feet), or the roar of the 2000 strong audience as we took to the stage. Either way, the first few bars of ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ Brought the whole routine back to me, as that was the song we ‘performed too’. A terrifying experience, matched only for me by jumping out of an aeroplane (something else I did for a radio station!).

For the record, I was Posh Spice and a cheeky woman said I had better legs than she did as we came off stage!

Some weeks ago, I played ‘Lets Go All the Way’ by Sly Fox and I was immediately transported to 1986 and my 19th birthday party. I felt positively youthful while listening to that song!

I played Madonna’s ’True Blue’, and I was back in Majorca, on my holidays, nursing a hangover but sat in a cool bar with a cold drink, again aged 19 or 20 and on the obligatory ‘lads’ holiday.

And so it goes on…….

The next time you hear a song on AOR that brings back memories, be they good or bad, just immerse yourself in those memories for a few minutes, as I do when I play these songs. You’ll be amazed at the power of music. And if you’re lucky, you’ll be 19 all over again! Or Posh Spice!

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!

Ian
